At GDeck, we understand that innovation in construction isn’t just about developing new products — it’s about supporting the people who use them every day on site.
That’s why we’ve been working closely with the NHBC Training Hubs in Cambridge and Hull, helping to equip the next generation of groundworkers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed.
Through a combination of classroom-based learning and practical installation, our sessions focus on modern approaches to block and beam flooring, including the use of precast concrete floor beams and insulated systems.

Bridging Theory and Practice
Each session begins in the classroom, where apprentices from a range of groundwork companies are introduced to the fundamentals of block and beam floor construction.
We explore why precast concrete floors — particularly beam and block systems — remain one of the most widely used solutions in UK housebuilding, covering everything from beam and block floor detail through to typical installation challenges.
Key topics include:
- Concrete floor beam design and specification
- Block and beam floor installation instructions
- Differences between traditional and insulated block and beam systems
- Common site challenges and best practice
This provides a strong technical foundation before moving into more advanced discussions around performance, efficiency, and evolving construction methods.
Introducing Modern Systems
Building on this knowledge, we then introduce the GDeck system, alongside precast concrete beams supplied by partners such as LiteCast and Milbank.
GDeck is designed to enhance traditional block and beam flooring by replacing heavy concrete and polystyrene infill blocks with a fully integrated expanded polystyrene (EPS) system.
The focus here is not just on product features, but on how modern systems are improving real-world performance on site, including:
- Reduced manual handling through lightweight EPS components
- Simplified installation compared to traditional block and beam floor systems
- Improved consistency across multiple plots
We also explore how systems like GDeck contribute to achieving a more efficient warm floor construction, supporting both performance and compliance requirements.
To reinforce learning, each session includes an interactive quiz — adding a competitive element while helping to embed key takeaways.
Hands-On Installation Experience
The most valuable part of the day comes during the practical session.
Using a full floor layout installed within the training hub, apprentices work directly with precast concrete beams and EPS flooring components, installing a block and beam floor system exactly as they would on a live site.
This hands-on approach allows participants to:
- Understand full installation sequencing
- Experience handling lightweight expanded polystyrene components
- See how a modern insulated block and beam floor comes together in practice
It also provides a clear comparison between traditional methods and more modern systems, particularly in terms of speed, safety, and ease of installation.
Preparing Apprentices for Site
For many apprentices, this is their first exposure to alternative approaches beyond traditional concrete floor construction.
By combining theory with practical experience, the training ensures they return to site with:
- Greater confidence in installation
- A broader understanding of precast concrete products and flooring systems
- Practical knowledge that can be applied immediately
Supporting Industry Progress
As the construction industry continues to evolve — with increasing focus on safety, efficiency, and performance — training and education will play a critical role in supporting that transition.
From understanding block and beam floor cost considerations through to selecting the right block and beam floor suppliers, knowledge is key to making informed decisions on site.
Collaborations like this help bridge the gap between traditional construction methods and modern solutions, ensuring the next generation of groundworkers are equipped for the future.
Final Thought
Investing in training isn’t just about today’s workforce — it’s about shaping how construction is delivered tomorrow.
We’re proud to support the NHBC Training Hubs and look forward to continuing to work with apprentices across the industry.
